Personal and Professional Goals:
During one of our first days into our Master Program at UBC our class was asked to write out three goals that we would like to attain during or after our program. Now as our last course come to a close we were asked to review our goals and see if the goals are still relevant and, if not, make changes to our goals. The following goals are the same goals to which I started 3 years ago. I had these visions and I am planning to see my visions through using some of the strategies, theories and ideas that I have learned through various course in my program at UBC. Here you will find my goal followed by the evidence supporting my goal, and finally the artifacts.
Goal 1:
To become a mentor for teachers who have integrated students with special needs in their classes, by supporting the teachers’ development of skills to facilitate the successful social and academic integration of these students.
Reason
In today's busy classrooms teachers are challenged with finding time to learn about supporting those with special needs and prepping materials for the modifications or adaptation of the curriculum. The following three artifacts I feel help support teachers or other adults who would want to know a little more about supporting those who have special needs.
EPSE 512 - Understanding what a Learning Disability is - A review
EPSE 516 - Supporting gifted Students - Website
EPSE 585 Understanding Social Emotional Well-being - A knowledge paper
Goal 2:
To obtain the knowledge and skills to be able to provide effective leadership at a system-wide level, with the aim of supporting the successful social and academic integration of students with special needs.
Reason
Those who take on educational leadership roles in a system wide level have to have strong skills in working with those with exceptionalities including those with challenging behaviours. When I am in this role I'll be supporting other teachers or educational assistances who work directly with the students which may lead to a change in school wide pedagogy. The following three artifacts provide me with the skills to make and manage change.
EPSE 515A - SWPBS grant proposal
EPSE 532 Functional Behavioural Assessments
EPSE 421 Integrated Case Study - Understanding Psychoeducational Assessments
Goal 3:
To obtain the knowledge and skills to support improved social and academic learning experiences for students with learning disabilities in School District 42.
Reason:
Due to my personal and professional experiences I have a very strong passion to help support those who struggle with Learning Disabilities. I feel that those who are in the educational field and those who make decisions about British Columbia's Education has to continue to learn, understand and support these students. We have to provide an education that fits with their unique but fully capable learning abilities. These artifacts describes some of the difficulties these students face and supports that will help them to learn.
EPSE 585 - Support Students Emotional Learning - Using MindUp
EPSE 526 Learning Disabilities Case Study
EPSE 512 - Definitions of Learning Disabilities: a Critique
